The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand partners with China’s National Gemstone Testing Centre to enhance global inspection standards, strengthening Thailand’s position in the gem and jewellery industry.

The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organisation) recently conducted a signing ceremony in collaboration with The National Gems and Jewelry Testing Co. Ltd. (National Gemstone Testing Centre) (NGTC) from Beijing, China. The purpose of this collaboration is to jointly develop global inspection standards and enhance the standard testing procedures for gemstones and jewellery using the GIT Standard. The ceremony took place in room 211A – 211C at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre.

Mr. Sumed Prasongpongchai, Director of The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand, revealed that NGTC, based in Beijing, China, is a prominent gemstone and jewellery testing laboratory within the People’s Republic of China, particularly known for its expertise in jade testing. To foster the creation of inspection standards between Thailand and China, GIT has joined hands with NGTC to exchange knowledge in gemstone inspection. A memorandum of understanding was signed during the 68th Bangkok Gem and Jewelry Fair.

In addition to the memorandum of understanding signing ceremony, GIT Standard laboratory registration certificates were awarded to 5 laboratories, including:

  • Rajamangala University of Technology ISAN, Centre of Industrial Instrument Calibration
  • Institute of Product Quality and Standardisation, Maejo University
  • TGL Thailand Gemological Laboratory
  • Mining Gems and Jewelry Laboratory
  • Bangkok Assay Office Co., Ltd.

This collaboration’s primary objective is to standardise gemstone and jewellery testing practices in Thailand and align them with global standards. To achieve this, the Institute has developed a uniform standard called GIT STANDARD, which encompasses laboratory standards and various operational procedures. This standard integrates with The National Gem and Jewelry Testing Centre as a technical and academic reference. The overarching aim is to establish consistent standards for gemstone and jewellery testing laboratories in Thailand, enabling smaller-scale laboratories to enhance and elevate their testing quality, analysis, and product testing to meet global standards. Ultimately, this initiative seeks to instill confidence in Thai gemstone and jewellery testing, positioning Thailand as a central hub for global trade and production in the gem and jewellery industry.
