Gem-A’s GemIntro
A Practical Entry Point Into Gemmology
Opening the Door to Deeper Knowledge and Lifelong Discovery
Every so often, someone asks me, “Where should I start if I want to learn gemmology — but I’m not ready to jump into a full Foundation program?”
It’s a fair question. Formal gemmological education is valuable — but it’s also a commitment of time and money. Not everyone is ready for that step.
That’s where GemIntro, from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), fits in.
GemIntro acknowledges that time is limited in today’s trade. Each chapter is concise. The course, however, is cumulative and assessed. It’s designed not just to inform, but to establish working fundamentals.
The course moves through the basics deliberately. What exactly defines a gem material? What separates natural, synthetic, and composite stones? How do hardness and toughness differ? What are we really seeing when we look through a loupe?

Students are introduced to light behavior — lustre, transparency, optical effects, pleochroism — and to the practical importance of treatments and disclosure. There’s discussion of inclusions and how magnification helps us understand a stone’s internal world. It also steps back to look at the bigger picture: geology, mining, traceability, and how gems move from mine to market.
There’s even room for birthstones and traditional lore — because, whether we like it or not, customers still ask.
The structure is straightforward: 11 chapters, quizzes along the way, and a final online assessment requiring an 80% pass mark to earn the Level 2 Award in GemIntro. It’s formal enough to matter, but accessible enough for beginners.
The syllabus itself hasn’t changed, but Gem-A has refined the way the course is delivered. Presentation has been improved, instructions clarified, and follow-up support strengthened. The association is also working with the National Association of Jewellers toward endorsement. Those who complete GemIntro may qualify for discounted progression into higher Gem-A qualifications, including the Gemmology Foundation program.
So who is it for?
Retail staff who want structured fundamentals.
Newcomers testing whether gemmology might be a career path.
Business owners who want a formal training option for entry-level employees.
Or simply enthusiasts who want more than piecemeal knowledge from videos and articles.
