Carved Gems – Inspiration & Expertise

Helen Serras-Herman, award-winning gem and jewelry artist and National Lapidary Hall of Fame Inductee, shares her passion in an in-person as well as Live Zoom event, Saturday, January 21, 2023, 2pm Central Standard Time (CST) at the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art.

Helen will share her journey in creating carved gems, from sculptor to gem sculpture, her influences, and sources for inspiration. She will discuss how labor intensive the art of carving gems is and why, the gem materials utilized, and will show step-by-step of the necessary tools, in the hopes of inspiring a new generation of gem carvers.

Carved Gems – Inspiration & Expertise is also the title of Helen’s new book, which offers a holistic understanding of the complex Fine Art of Gem Sculpture, or Gem Art, which combines knowledge and skills in LapidarySculpture, Drawing, Gemology, and Jewelry.

Helen Serras-Herman holds a Master’s degree in sculpture, along with a graduate degree in gemology. Helen loves to share her 4 decades of accumulated knowledge regarding the necessary tools and equipment for gem carving, and the lapidary steps that take a rock from rough to a finished piece of sculpture or jewelry. 

Her passion for the subject is infectious.

This lecture is in association with the Lizzadro Museum’s 60th Anniversary Special Exhibit “On the Cutting Edge: Contemporary Gemstone Sculpture”, in which Serras-Herman has two gem sculptures.
