Zimbabwe School of Mines Introduces Gemstone Cutting

The Zimbabwe school of mines (ZSM) seeks to explore opportunities to introduce programs in emerging areas such as renewable energy, sustainable mining practices, digitalization, robotics, AI, and augmented realities. Speaking during the institution’s 29th graduation and prize-giving ceremony, held under the theme “Unearthing Critical Mining Skills to Achieve Vision 2030,” ZSM principal engineer Edwin Gwaze said the institution is on a drive to retool all its laboratories, and has introduced drone technology in the past year. He said some of the courses that have been introduced include 1. certificates in gemstone cutting and polishing, which was launched in August, 2. a diploma in gemology, and 3. certificates in small scale management and occupational health, safety, and environment.

Interestingly, they also announced that they are teaching Chinese to their final year students as well as staff.
