Fashionably late has a whole new meaning. For more than a century, jewelers have been pulling off one of high jewelry’s most elegant tricks: hiding the watch.
Long before smartphones made checking the time effortless (and forgettable), luxury jewelry houses were finding ways to disguise watch dials within bracelets, pendants, brooches, and other jeweled creations—even lipstick cases and cigarette boxes. The idea was simple. First, the piece had to succeed as jewelry. The fact that it could also tell time was secondary, and often kept completely out of sight.
Today, Van Cleef & Arpels continues that tradition through a collection of High Jewelry secret watches concealed beneath gemstone-set flowers, ribbons, and historic bracelet designs. In many cases, the watch is not the only thing being hidden. The mechanism that reveals the dial is often disguised as well, requiring designers, jewelers, watchmakers, and gem setters to work together to preserve the surprise.
A Tradition Built on Secrets
Secret watches have been part of Van Cleef & Arpels’ creative vocabulary since the 1920s. According to the Maison, these hidden timepieces embody its longstanding fascination with mystery, transforming the simple act of reading the time into a subtle game of hide-and-seek.
But the hidden watch is only part of the story.
Throughout its history, Van Cleef & Arpels has repeatedly explored the idea of concealment and surprise, not only through secret watches, but through invisible gemstone settings – the VCA Mystery Set technique, laying down a carpet of gemstones with no visible metal settings. Where watchmaking and high jewelry intersect, discovering the secret becomes part of the luxury experience. The wearer is invited not merely to observe the jewel, but to unlock the watch.
Mystery Set Emeralds Hide the Time
Among the most dramatic examples is a secret watch concealed behind Mystery Set emeralds. Two secrets in one!
At first glance, the piece appears to be a gem-set bracelet. The dial remains completely hidden beneath a curved surface of invisibly mounted emeralds framed by sweeping arcs of round brilliant-cut diamonds. Only when the cover is opened do we discover that the jewel is also a watch.
The new creation draws inspiration from Van Cleef & Arpels’ 1941 Ludo Hexagone Macaron secret watch. Its bracelet is formed from a meshwork of yellow-gold hexagons accented with star-set emeralds, while the watch cover showcases the Maison’s celebrated Mystery Set technique.
In many ways, the piece perfectly captures the theme running throughout this collection. The watch is hidden. The gem-setting method is hidden. Even the latch that uncovers the watch is hidden in the design. The result is a beautiful piece of jewelry with a secret.

The Return of the Ludo Secret Watch
The newest addition to the hidden watch collection delivers us back to one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ most recognizable historic designs – the Ludo bracelet, bright-polished yellow-gold “briquette” links first introduced in 1934.
The latest sapphire-set version, inspired by a 1949 model, features yellow gold, blue sapphires, and a guilloché white mother-of-pearl watch dial.
Even after more than ninety years, the Ludo design is still one of VCA’s most recognizable high jewelry designs.

Introduced in 1937, the Ludo remains one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ most recognizable designs. Inspired by couture and belt motifs, its articulated gold ribbon combines flexibility with elegance.
This sapphire-set reinterpretation revisits an historic Ludo watch while concealing a guilloché white mother-of-pearl dial beneath its jeweled buckle.
Ribbon Becomes Jewelry, Jewelry Becomes Watch
The Ruban Secret watch takes inspiration from another Van Cleef & Arpels hallmark: couture.
Designed to evoke the movement and softness of ribbon, the piece reproduces the appearance of folded fabric using precious metals and gemstones. A hidden dial is tucked beneath a diamond-set bow, creating an intimate interaction between wearer and watch.
The numbers involved are extraordinary. The watch incorporates more than 1,100 diamonds totaling over 20 carats, accompanied by nearly 900 sapphires totaling more than 21 carats.
Viewed from a gemological perspective, the watch is as much a gemstone sculpture as it is a timepiece.

A Flower that Keeps Time
Nature has long served as a source of inspiration for Van Cleef & Arpels, and the Primerose Secrète watch continues that tradition.
The floral design conceals a tiny dial within the heart of a jeweled blossom composed of diamonds and pink sapphires. Worn on a pink grosgrain bracelet or as a clip, the piece functions equally well as jewelry and watch.
Like many of the Maison’s floral creations, the design emphasizes volume, color, and movement. The hidden dial feels almost incidental to the flower itself.
That may be the ultimate expression of the secret watch concept.

Jewelry First, Timekeeping Second
For most people today, checking the time requires little more than glancing at a phone.
That reality makes secret watches particularly fascinating.
Rather than making time easier to read, they intentionally make it harder. The reward is a sense of discovery, craftsmanship, and playfulness that has appealed to collectors for more than a century.
Whether hidden beneath Mystery Set emeralds, concealed inside a sapphire bracelet, tucked beneath a diamond ribbon, or nestled within a jeweled flower, these watches remind us that luxury is not always about convenience.
Sometimes the most beautiful thing a watch can do is hide.
