“Dr. Akhavan is well known in the faceting world as an accomplished faceter, innovator of new cutting designs, a collector of rare and unobtainable synthetic gem materials, and the founder of ‘The Gemstone Lab,’ a consortium and research partnership focusing on growth and characterization of novel sapphires.”
“He is also founder of the historic Verneuil codes used to standardize flame fusion sapphire and spinels. “
“In his other life, he is the chief resident of Plastic Surgery at Rutgers University in New Jersey. “
“We hope to cover areas such as:
▻ identifying synthetics in the 21st century world of gems
▻ separating synthetics from natural stones in the gem mining zones of the world, where more often than not, these days, the miners are flogging synthetics to unsuspecting gem tourists as natural stones
▻ methodologies of manufacturing of traditional synthetics
▻ reviewing what synthetics are out there now and what we should be looking for when evaluating stones.”
