Sotheby’s: Hoping for better Results in Paris

Roskin Gem News Report –
Trying not to remember the last New York auction (see results here), and hoping for better results this past Wednesday, March 27th, in Paris, Sotheby’s Auction House was selling their Fine Jewels, including this terrific Burmese no heat 23-carat sugar loaf blue sapphire by Cartier.
Whatever was happening in U.S. two weeks ago, it seems like it traveled across the Atlantic to France this week. If our math is correct, upon looking over the top 48 lots listed as highest estimates, 25% did not sell. That includes, sadly enough, this top item, the sugar-loaf sapphire. The sapphire had company. Other lots in eth top 48 that did not sell were: a 5 carat princess cut diamond ring, a 13 carat Fancy Brownish-Yellow diamond ring, a Van Cleef and Arpels diamond necklace, a 2 carat Fancy Yellowish-Green diamond ring, a 6 carat Colombian emerald (minor enhancement) diamond ring, and a Vever ruby and diamond necklace.
Other pieces up for sale that did sell were:
Kashmir – no heat

Georges Fouquet was a prominent French jeweler and art dealer who played a significant role in the Art Nouveau movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Paris in 1862 into a family of jewelers. Georges Fouquet, along with his brother Auguste, took over the family business, Maison Fouquet, which was established by their father, Alphonse Fouquet.
Georges Fouquet was known for his innovative and avant-garde designs, particularly in jewelry. Maison Fouquet gained fame for its involvement in the Art Nouveau movement, which was characterized by organic and flowing forms inspired by nature. Georges collaborated with notable artists of the time, such as Alphonse Mucha and Henri Vever, to create unique and artistic pieces.
One of Georges Fouquet’s most famous contributions to the Art Nouveau movement was the design and creation of jewelry for actress Sarah Bernhardt. The collaboration between Fouquet and Bernhardt resulted in pieces that were not only exquisite in craftsmanship but also reflected the aesthetics of the Art Nouveau style.
Today, some of his creations are considered collector’s items, and Maison Fouquet’s influence on the Art Nouveau era is remembered as an important chapter in the history of decorative arts.
