AMS Micro: the Latest Tool for Detecting Synthetic Diamonds

De Beers –
13 Feb 2024 –
Press Release

It’s no surprise that we focused a lot this year on detection of synthetic diamond. And this press release from De Beers announcing a new detection device was noteworthy. The AMS Micro can screen up to 2,500 diamonds per hour in the 0.6mm to 0.9mm size range, automatically separating natural diamonds from synthetic/lab-grown diamonds and other materials with a zero per cent false positive rate and a referral rate of less than three per cent.

This really grabbed your attention, which is why it is in the Top 25.

Pakistan: Balochistan’s Large Aqua Deposits
Need to be Tapped

We discovered this story in the Nation, about large aquamarine deposits just waiting to be worked. And it looks like many of you are looking for another aquamarine source, so you are hopeful that Pakistan could be the answer.

“Talking to WealthPK, he pointed out that Balochistan’s geological environment indicated the existence of aquamarine deposits. ‘Chagai, the thrusting faults of Ras Koh Arch, and all the areas in the axial belt in Balochistan are said to be aquamarine-rich. In the Ras Koh Arch, the occurrence of igneous activity in the sedimentary rocks and the resulting metamorphism strongly indicate the presence of aquamarine. The axial belt and Chagai are also said to contain aquamarine reserves,’ he explained.”

Or maybe you are more interested in the associated minerals… “The presence of aquamarine reserves in the region resulted from hydrothermal activity and the suitable environment for the occurrence of garnet and emerald (both are the associative gems of aquamarine), he added.”

Winston Still King of Diamonds

from Harry Winston

You love iconic jewels, and so do we!

We always look to the great jewelry houses for their new High Jewelry collections, and Harry Winston never fails to deliver spectacular pieces. This time, the spotlight is on a reimagined design, inspired by fresh snow glistening on a holly wreath at Mr. Winston’s Scarsdale estate.

“Mr. Winston designed this diamond necklace as the inaugural jewel of the iconic Winston Cluster Collection. With its minimal platinum setting and sculptural clusters, it embodies the hallmarks of the House aesthetic.”

Exactly! As Winston jewelry designer Maurice Galli once remarked, Winston would have simply glued the gems directly onto the client, if he could—no metal necessary. Minimal platinum settings with gemstone clusters perfectly capture the signature Winston style.

The Winston Cluster Diamond Necklace
180 marquise, pear-shaped and round brilliant cut diamonds, weighing a total of approximately 48.80 carats, set in platinum.

Sapphire & Diamond Rings
have Impressive Showing at Sotheby’s Geneva

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

If you enjoy auction results reports—and we know you do!—this one was a must-read. Featuring numerous sapphire and diamond rings, Kashmir and Sri Lankan stones, and gem-set jewels worthy of your time, this auction was a true feast for the eyes. Craftsmanship and design took center stage, with jewelry parures stealing the spotlight.

The Allnatt—an historic 101-carat Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond brooch—did not sell, but its appearance provided the perfect opportunity to revisit its fascinating history. Emeralds performed exceptionally well, as did a very large colorless cushion-shaped diamond. Period pieces, brooches, and even a black onyx, diamond-studded belt buckle added to the mix. If you don’t recall this sale, it’s worth revisiting for its unforgettable highlights.

Our feature opens with the obvious: “Kashmir sapphires (along with a Sri Lankan sapphire resembling a Kashmir) continue to surprise auction houses.” At Sotheby’s Geneva sale on Tuesday, May 14, several sapphires sold for multiples of their high estimates, with a number of other pleasant surprises rounding out the event.

The Collection of Sir Elton John:
Opening Night & The Jewel Box

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

Provenance can’t get much better than “once owned and worn by Sir Elton John!”

As the Christie’s auction house catalogue stated, “his music is audacious, poignant and filled with unique personalities — and the trove of art, fashion and objects that populated the singer’s Atlanta home on Peachtree Road was no different. With a wealth of one-of-a-kind pieces, from a custom Damien Hirst to an extravagant 18th-century costume designed by Sandy Powell, the collection of Sir Elton John reflects the sensibility of a singular artist, one whose work and vision is admired the world over.” We of course, focused on the jewelry. There were numerous pieces of jewelry from Cartier, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Marcus & Co., and more – all wonderful designs, and very wearable!

Part II: Gemworld Reports on 2024 Expectations

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

There’s no doubt that we all crave gem news that can help us in our day-to-day business. That’s why we make it a priority to cover it for you here in The Roskin Gem News Report.

This feature story is a continuation of the presentation by Gemworld’s Stuart Robertson and Brecken Branstrator at AGTA’s Elevated Seminar Series in Tucson. Part II focuses on Gem Notes.

(Part I ranks as our #4 Top Story in the Top 25! You can find that below.)

Stuart and Brecken shared valuable insights on what to look for, and why it matters. Here’s a small sample:

In Place of the Big Three
Affordability and availability were two big topics of discussion during the second half of the presentation. Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald are a bit pricey these days, and that opens the door for the similar color, colored gems, says Robertson. And so in general, for the typical “bread and butter” range of gems in the industry, at a few thousand dollars price point, (e.g. spinels, rhodolite garnets, and rubellite tourmalines) are gems that have seen fairly strong consumer interest.

Sotheby’s Signed Jewels Auction – Lack-Luster

Gary Roskin
Roskin Gem news Report

There are many reasons to pay attention to the auction results featured in The Roskin Gem News Report.

We highlight the trends, comparative values, and unique design ideas. We focus on the details just for you—such as the color grades of fancy color diamonds, the gem materials used (especially when they have provenance or are unique or unusual)—all of which can support your business.

This particular auction emphasized design. Sotheby’s New York showcased an assortment of impressive signed jewels, including creations from Cartier, Bulgari, and David Webb, along with an extraordinary number from Van Cleef & Arpels, among others.

According to Sotheby’s, this auction featured “iconic collections such as ‘Panthère,’ ‘À Cheval,’ and ‘Serpenti,’ alongside exceptional designs such as ‘Mystery-Set’ jewels.”

We took a close look at 32 of those pieces!

The talking points for us were:
1.) Glass beads in a piece that’s estimated to sell between $60,000 and $80,000 USD
2.) Several Coral pieces – we discuss the issues of coral*
3.) Does it matter if two diamonds are missing in a piece expected to sell between $250,000 and $350,000 USD
4.) Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds without a lab report? Really? Is that a thing?
5.) Only Wood and Gold in a piece estimated to sell between $20,000 and $30,000?*
6.) Untested Turquoise? Do you buy that?
7.) A $2- to $3-million dollar Fancy Vivid necklace! And the diamonds DO HAVE a laboratory report! BUT WAIT – THERE’S MORE! Of the 52 fancy yellow diamonds, 51 are Fancy Vivid, and 1 is graded Fancy Intense. Wait – WHAT?
8.) A million+ dollar diamond bracelet with mix of sapphires from Kashmir, Burma, and Sri Lanka! This tells us something about origin!
9.) A Burmese Ruby bracelet – tested… no heat. Sweet! Estimated at $250,000 to $350,000. Made by Harry Winston!
And 10.) Oscar Heyman in the spotlight with two beautiful pieces!

Painting with Gems:
Van Cleef & Arpels’ Bracelets – “a Jewelry Holy Grail”

BY STELLENE VOLANDES
FEB 23, 2024 9:00 AM EST
Town & Country Magazine

Every once in a while, Town & Country magazine publishes a highly informative write-up on jewels. This particular report focused on the Van Cleef & Arpels Art Deco Egyptian Revival narrative bracelet. Here’s what they had to say:

“If you asked me to name 10 jewels that a collector should own,” says Claibourne Poindexter, vice president and senior specialist in the jewelry department at Christie’s, “a Van Cleef 1920s narrative bracelet would be one of them.”

These gems of the Art Deco Egyptian Revival period have long been sought after—a testament to their connection to history and exceptional craftsmanship. Now, they’ve captured a global audience of collectors and achieved iconic status.

So, how could you not read this feature story?

Agate Road WINS the Pilgrim Stakes

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

We love discovering feature stories that are “gem-related” but not entirely about gems—just to mix things up and bring a little levity to your day. When we came across Agate Road, we knew we had a winner!

You must think so too!!

And yes, there’s even video of the actual race. Of the hundreds of feature stories we published this year, this one earned a spot in the Top 25!

“How can you resist a horse named after a gem material? And it gets better—the lineage includes Yellow Agate and a horse named Gemologist! Now you have to watch the race!”

And before that race came the one below…

By Alan Carasso

Repole Stable and St Elias Stable’s Agate Road (c, 2, Quality Road–Yellow Agate, by Gemologist) was hammered into even-money favoritism for his turf and two-turn debuts on the strength of a near-miss runner-up effort in a rained-off maiden Aug. 5. At the end of 8 1/2 very eventful furlongs Saturday afternoon at the Spa, the $650,000 Keeneland September purchase was named a ‘TDN Rising Star’.

Drawn widest in a field of 10, Agate Road was behind the eight ball right from the opening bell, as he broke a good two paths to his outside, costing himself any shot at securing a forward position. To make matters a bit more complicated, he didn’t take the first turn particularly well and settled near the tail of the field as 11-1 Ocala Rocket (Hard Spun) led them along at a moderate early clip. Racing with just two behind as they hit the backstretch, but still patiently handled by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Agate Road found himself with about eight lengths to find banking around the final turn, but was forced to take the scenic route, conceding ground to add to his trouble line through the opening 6 1/2 furlongs. But, switched out widest into the lane and despite being bothered by a shifting-out rival nearing the furlong grounds, Agate Road steamed home down the center of the course to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a race he really had no business winning. He becomes the 15th ‘Rising Star’ for his sire.

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

We all love opals, don’t we? And it’s clear you enjoyed this report as much as we did!

Ever since our trip to Lightning Ridge, we’ve been keeping up with the latest happenings down under. This feature highlights the brand-new Australian Opal Awards!

The awards ceremony took place at the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club. (For our American readers, that’s lawn bowling—not the pin bowling you’re used to!)

The competition featured seven jewelry award categories and a People’s Choice Award, with over AUD $35,000 in cash and prizes.

Since we have unlimited space for images, we’ve included all the winners here for you in The Roskin Gem News Report!

Cambodia’s Gems, Jewellery Exhibition, March 2024

The Roskin Gem News Report has an international readership, so we strive to cover as much of the global gemstone industry as possible.

This is a perfect example: a local Cambodian gem and jewelry show announcement. While it may pale in comparison to the September Hong Kong Show and offer minimal information, it’s still significant nonetheless.

And clearly, you thought so too!

Grizzly’s Zambian Emerald Auction helps Market the Brand – Sales Top $19 Million

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

We love uncovering gemstone sourcing information that you might not be aware of, such as Grizzly Mining.

Grizzly Mining Limited has reportedly been one of the world’s largest producers of emeralds for the past 25 years. In its most recent press release, the company announced the results of its latest international emerald auction, which was held this month (March) in Dubai. The auction featured the latest production, including medium- to high-grade rough emeralds from their flagship emerald mine.

So, if you believe that all Zambian emeralds come from the Kagem mine, think again—just look to the west.

Pearl Mania in China!

Emily “D.D.” Frontiere
Roskin Gem News Report

This was an exclusive report by gemologist and journalist D.D. Frontiere on the crazy pearl market in China! For years, the pearl market was steady. Then the pandemic hit, and pearl farms shut down, causing a global shortage—just as the Chinese economy was gearing up to expand and craving cultured pearls. That’s when Pearl Mania happened!

It’s a history lesson that unfolded this year. Many of you have already read this, but for those who haven’t, click the link.

Spotlight on De Beers – the Las Vegas Presentation

Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –

Not surprisingly, this feature story, a presentation by DeBeers, including CEO Al Cook, ranked number 11 in our Top 25. This is a detailed account of what DeBeers has seen with economies and synthetic diamonds confusing the diamond market, as well as mine production, upcoming mine closures, and more. The biggest surprise though came at the end of the presentation when it was announced that DeBeers was getting out of the synthetic diamond jewelry market. No wonder this was a very popular read!

“A presentation by De Beers, with Al Cook, Chief Executive Officer, De Beers Group, Richard Lawson, CFO, De Beers Group, and Sandrine Conseiller, CEO, De Beers Brands.”

It was opening day of the JCK Las Vegas show. Al Cook, the new De Beers Group chief executive officer, greeted a packed ballroom of mainly diamond wholesalers, including site-holders, some retailers, and a good number of industry notables.

Cook, at the time of this presentation, had been CEO of the De Beers Group for just 15 months. And now he was addressing a room filled with well-informed and concerned industry members. They were concerned about the economy, about falling diamond prices, about Russian sanctions, about the rising market share of synthetic diamonds, and about the sale of De Beers!

JEWELERY ∙ FILM ∙ MOMENTS – Hollywood’s Love Affair with Jewelry – a Bejeweled Cinema Exhibition

Gary Roskin –
RoskinGemNewsReport –

Reading about gem and jewelry exhibitions is a great way to gain inspiration. You can apply it locally to your own business or internationally to the trade. Nina Hald is one of our favorite exhibition curators, and this particular exhibition certainly caught everyone’s attention.

A Nina Hald Exhibition
This gem and jewelry-inspired exhibit has been curated by Nina Hald, author of 12 books and 10 exhibition catalogues, editor of AuClock and Luxury Aficionados, royal jewelry curator, and freelance jewelry journalist.

Curator Nina Hald explains: “Jewelry appears in many forms in films and streaming series. This can include classic product placement, such as when a jewel heist is at the center of a film’s plot. Or, the stars themselves wear jewelry worth millions of kroner when walking the red carpet at the Oscars or the Cannes Film Festival.”

In other words, the exhibition delves into Hollywood’s love affair with the jewelry industry, which has shaped pop culture’s iconic entertainment for more than 75 years.

World Federation of Diamond Bourses, French Ministry of Economy and Finance, & the Definition of “Synthetic”

Gary Roskin
Roskin Gem News Report

This past year saw many feature articles discussing the differences between synthetic and natural diamonds, and how to detect them. In fact, the number one feature from 2023 was an educational piece focused solely on the difference between lab-grown and synthetic diamonds (hint: they are the same).

So here we are again, but this time, it’s a discussion from France and the WFDB. And did we ever get feedback on this one!

“The term ‘synthetic diamond’ is well-understood in the sciences of gemmology and mineralogy to mean that the material is diamond, with the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as natural diamonds (just not made by Mother Nature). But the rest of the world, for the most part, believes—incorrectly—that the term ‘synthetic diamond’ means ‘fake diamond.’ (Read here to catch up.)”

“The World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) just praised the French Ministry of Economy and Finance for its decision to ban the use of any terminology other than ‘synthetic’ for non-natural diamonds. This decision means that the terms ‘lab-grown diamonds’ or ‘cultivated diamonds’ will not be legal in France.”

More from the Red Carpet…
Best Jewelry at the 2024 Grammy Awards!

February 12, 2024
by LAURALEE
WhoWoreWhatJewels.com

There were SO many great Red Carpet reports from LauraLee at WhoWoreWhatJewels.com this year! We can’t thank her enough for her fantastic reports that highlight the gems and jewels celebrities are wearing. This particular report was exceptional!

“At the 2024 Grammy Awards, music icons didn’t just hit the high notes with their performances – they also dazzled on the red carpet with their stunning jewelry choices,” writes Lauralee at WhoWoreWhatJewels.com.

Lauralee always focuses on the jewelry, from “breathtaking diamond necklaces” to “edgy rock ‘n’ roll cross pendants” and “show-stopping cocktail rings.”

Dua Lipa was once again wearing Tiffany & Co. with Ice Spice, Lenny Kravitz, and Doja Cat wearing “striking diamond crosses from Loree Rodkin.”

Lauralee says that Coco Jones and Celine Dion “stole the show” with big cocktail rings from Kallati and Tiffany & Co.

And of course you cannot talk about the Grammys without mentioning Taylor Swift, seen here wearing Lorraine Schwartz (and more).

So here it is – the standout jewelry moments from the 2024 Grammy Awards presented by Who Wore What Jewels.

Enchanting Imagination:
The Objets d’Art of André Chervin
and Carvin French Jewelers

Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –

We had the privilege of receiving an exclusive tour of Enchanting Imagination: The Objets d’Art of André Chervin and Carvin French Jewelers, an exhibition of meticulously created objets d’art, on view to the public for the very first time at the New York Historical Society Museum.

And this one really piqued your interest. We hope some of you were able to see the collection in person!

The exhibit featured works by André Chervin and his team at his New York atelier, Carvin French.

On display were one-of-a-kind lamps, clocks, figurines, boxes, personal accessories, and table decorations, all fashioned in gold and silver, with gems such as rubies, diamonds, and sapphires, as well as masterfully carved jadeite jade, lapis lazuli, amethyst, and rock crystal quartz.

And we have numerous images to share with you from the exhibition.

Over the past six decades, Carvin French has manufactured thousands of magnificent pieces for Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Bulgari, Verdura,  and other distinguished shops. Though revered by jewelry experts and professionals, the name Carvin French is generally unknown to the public as anonymity was essential to the firm’s success: each jewelry retailer sold the firm’s masterworks under their own brand names.

Malawi Aqua Looks Promising

Roskin Gem News Report –

First-hand information is always preferred, which is why we reach out to as many sources as possible to provide you with the best coverage in the industry.

Here is the story of Alfred Noah of Afro Gifts Mining Pvt Ltd Co., who is currently mining in Kasungu and has found promising aquamarine deposits.

Noah is a prospector and artisanal small-scale miner, who, along with his brother Harrison, is prospecting in the Kasungu area of northern Malawi.

“The first day, we hit some surface low-grade material with some clean portions,” Noah described. “Good cabbing material. We extracted 22kgs of aqua from a vein we encountered today. There are some nice milky gems, but what we are also finding—and are very excited about—are some of the finest aquamarine colors ever from Malawi.”

As they went deeper, the clarity improved, and the color deepened.

AGTA Bans Synthetics from Shows: Why Now?

Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –

With synthetic diamonds now taking a larger share of the market, AGTA flexed its collective muscle and banned all synthetic gem materials/products from their Tucson and Las Vegas trade shows. Why all synthetics? Why not just synthetic diamonds? And why, if everything needs to be disclosed anyway, ban any synthetics at all? All of those questions are answered here in this very popular report!

“By now, you should have read that the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) plans on banning all synthetic gem materials from their GemFair trade shows beginning in 2025. Why? Why does AGTA want to ban all synthetic gemstones from the show floor?”

More Diamond Counterfeit Inscriptions Encountered:
Test Everything to be Sure

Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –

This was a report from late December of 2023 … but because we are still hearing of this – even this month, December 2024, we thought this would be a good reminder… and after all, this was a very popular read, which is why it is ranked number 5! GIA has introduced a portable desktop machine that will scan the diamond’s inscription, send the image to GIA, and within minutes, relay back whether or not the inscription is an authentic GIA inscription, or a fake!

“In their press release from Monday, December 18, 2023, Gem-Tech Istituto Gemmologico, an independent gemological research, teaching and identification facility, located in Marcianise, Italy, say their lab has encountered “a potential scam involving synthetic diamonds with inconsistent GIA certificates.”

We were so happy to see this feature story rank 3rd in the Top 25 about jewelry artist Barbara Berk and her platinum and aquamarine pendant, which was donated to the National Gem Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The special opportunity to join Barbara and gem artist Sherris Cottier Shank allowed us to bring you the presentation of the piece to the gem and mineral collection’s curator, Gabriela Farfan, seen in the image above.

“Barbara M. Berk is an artist, an expert in textile techniques in metal, and a jeweler, weaving precious metals into museum-quality wearable art, including brooches, necklaces, earrings, and hair ornaments. Tiara, Diadem, Crown:
The Importance of Who Wears What!

Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –

And the number ONE feature for 2024 is our review of Lady Kerry Gregory’s presentation, “Tiaras, Diadems, & Crowns: The Importance of Who Wears What!

Lady Kerry Gregory of Gemmology Rocks is a passionate gemologist with a love for bejeweled headwear—and a playful “beef” with Burger King. Her presentation at AGTA’s Elevated Seminar Series in Tucson, Burger King or Burger Duke, was as entertaining as it was insightful.

“I simply love tiaras,” Gregory exclaimed while sporting one of the many tiaras she brought for demonstration, all carefully arranged at the podium. The fun truly begins when people ask questions, as most don’t know the differences between a tiara, a diadem, a coronet, and a crown—or what makes each one so special. But Lady Gregory knows!

This delightful surprise left us smiling in the best way. We thoroughly enjoyed Kerry’s presentation in Tucson and had even more fun writing about it for the Report. But we had NO idea that YOU would feel the same way!

We will be back this time again next year to wrap up out Top 25 Reports for 2025!

See you then!
