We found this story in an elegantly detailed report by Bryan Hood in the Robb Report here. Mercedes-Benz has just released its latest G-Class Wagon, the boxy “Stronger than Diamonds” edition, which includes 4 quarter carat round brilliant cut diamonds, tube-set into the top of the four door locking pins.

Of course we just had to ask… Are they natural or synthetic/created?

We reached out to the press office of Mercedes Benz, the local dealership, the national Mercedes-Benz Club, and finally ….

… to the Beverly Hills Mercedes-Benz dealership showroom floor. It was there that we found out that these special cars are usually built for the collector, and rarely if ever do they make it to the United States. “They are museum pieces.” We can assume that this would mean that the diamonds are natural, but we have yet to have any confirmation from Mercedes-Benz. The last promotion of a similar collectors edition included the use of rose gold.

We Are Impressed – An RJC Certificate
Not able to confirm whether Natural or Lab Grown/Synthetic/Created at press time, we were able to speak with a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz USA. “Unfortunately we won’t have a confirmation of whether the diamonds in the Mercedes-Benz G 550 STRONGER THAN DIAMONDS Edition are natural or lab grown in time for your deadline. However, each vehicle does include a certificate from the Responsible Jewelry Council assuring the diamonds originate from ethically, socially and ecologically responsible sources.”

Responsible Jewelry Council

NOTE: In 2021, the RJC decided to develop a new industry Laboratory Grown Materials Standard (LGMS). The development will include a minimum of two rounds of public consultations and input from the multi-stakeholder Standards Committee to ensure that the development sets a benchmark within the jewellery industry on best practice for responsible business practices for laboratory grown materials.

“At the RJC we know there is a market and demand for both natural and laboratory grown diamonds. With the RJC standard for laboratory grown diamonds planned to launch in 2024, we want to be sure there is clarity for our members and especially consumers, so they can be confident in exactly what they are buying. We believe that consumers should fully understand the source behind both –  whether that is mined from the earth for natural diamonds, or manufactured in a factory for laboratory grown diamonds. There are existing standards for natural diamonds; the need for a completely new set of comprehensive standards covering laboratory grown diamonds is recognised by the industry. As an ISEAL Code Compliant Member and standards and certification organisation for the global watch and jewellery industry, the RJC is uniquely positioned for that role.” Melanie Grant Executive Director, Responsible Jewellery Council
