Life Threatening Flooding in East African Mining Areas

Steady rains in Kenya and Tanzania are causing life threatening flooding of the mines in Taita–Taveta County – outlined in red – up through Nairobi, extending down through Arusha, to Dodoma, to Morogoro, to Tanga, devastating numerous villages, killing hundreds. “The mines have been flooded, and infrastructure torn up,” reports Lee Horowitz, expert mining, gem & mineral consultant.

“When mine pits flood, you need pumps. … and you have snake problems, too!” says Horowitz.

“We can’t get anything out of Taita right now due to the torrential rains,” says Horowitz. “Production will be way down, even if they get back into mines/pits. It will take many months to fix.”

The El Niño weather pattern with heavy rains is expected to go through February.
