The Legendary Mine
Nestled within the renowned Muzo formation, the Coscuez mine has for centuries been a source of some of the worlds finest coveted emeralds. Now under FURA’s stewardship, Coscuez benefits from scientific exploration and advanced extraction techniques leading to an upsurge in both quality and production. Recent discoveries from the mine feature emeralds with deep verdant hues and exceptional clarity, honouring the mine’s rich heritage while promising a future filled with new discoveries.
“These emeralds embody the heritage and quality that make Colombian emeralds so sought after worldwide. Our auctions provide rare access to Coscuez’s finest gemstones,” says Rupak Sen, chief marketing officer at FURA Gems.
Transparent Sourcing with Provenance Proof Blockchain
Since 2017, FURA Gems has led the coloured gemstone industry in transparency and responsibility through Provenance Proof blockchain technology. This innovative digital solution creates a “digital twin” for each gemstone, providing a permanent, immutable record of its provenance, ownership history, and unique characteristics. Every lot sold at the auction is uploaded to the Provenance Proof blockchain platform before the sale, and the digital key is transferred to the auction winner along with the gemstone upon completion of the sale. Each Authorized Auction Partner undergoes a thorough KYC process to ensure full verification, strengthening FURA’s commitment to sustainable sourcing and industry-leading transparency.
Supporting the Colombian Emerald Community and Promoting Local Development
Beyond its contributions to the global gemstone industry, FURA Gems, along with its subsidiary FURA Coscuez SA, is committed to fostering positive change in the communities surrounding Coscuez. The company’s local initiatives focus on creating sustainable livelihoods, educational and training programs, and environmental conservation efforts. Each auction reaffirms FURA Gems’ commitment to enhancing community well-being and honouring the legacy of those who have supported Coscuez for generations.
Through local engagement and socially responsible practices, FURA Gems is working to ensure that the benefits of a sustainable gemstone industry reach both the land and its people, preserving Colombia’s natural resources for the future.
Consistent Supply and Enhanced Value
FURA Coscuez SA takes pride in providing a reliable supply of high-quality, responsibly sourced Colombian emeralds, enhancing value with each auction. By prioritizing ethical sourcing and transparent auction practices, FURA Gems offers buyers a trusted experience while strengthening its partnerships with local communities. This approach underscores FURA’s dedication to a sustainable supply chain that builds confidence for buyers and uplifts the communities integral to the brand’s success.
This seventh auction reinforces FURA’s mission to elevate Colombian emeralds on the world stage, presenting a combination of unrivalled quality and responsible practices that shape a sustainable future for all.
Looking ahead, FURA Gems will host additional auctions featuring Mozambican rubies (December 10-14, 2024) and Australian sapphires (January 21-24, 2025), further expanding access to responsibly sourced, world-class gemstones.
Cinco Años de FURA Gems en Colombia

When FURA Gems arrived in Colombia in 2018, Coscuez was a small-scale, artisanal emerald mine with very few formal jobs. With the arrival of FURA Gems, today the company has a medium-scale, technologically advanced mine that generates 480 direct jobs that impact more than 7,000 members of the community.
After five years, FURA Coscuez is the main source of income for the municipality of San Pablo de Borbur in western Boyacá. In recent years, the company has invested close to COP$10 billion in social responsibility projects for the region, including the FURA Academy, through which it offers education, workshops and courses to the community; the FURA Educational Fund, with which the mining company supports 22 young people from the region who have received scholarships for their university studies, some have already graduated and others are finishing their degrees; FURA Gems also promotes the generation of sustainable income by strengthening local enterprises, both agricultural and commercial, among other initiatives.
Without a doubt, one of the greatest contributions of FURA Gems in Colombia has been to bring transparency and formality to the emerald industry in the country. With an investment exceeding COP$ 450,000 million, FURA Gems, in its first three auctions in the country, generated more than COP$ 41,000 million in taxes and royalties, as a result of the income from these commercial events that are held both nationally and internationally.
FURA Gems promotes the quality of Colombian emeralds in the world, and thus positions the good name of Colombia globally.
“When we arrived, we had three focuses: generating quality jobs, working with the community and adding sustainable value. Today I can say that we are achieving this and we continue to focus on these three axes,” said Sanjay Kumar, General Director for Colombia of Fura Gems Coscuez.
APRECOL, founded in 2002, works alongside the Colombian Government and has formed strategic alliances with major international organizations, NGOs, laboratories and other stakeholders to help establish policies and support sustainable emerald production.

About the FURA Coscuez Mine
The Coscuez mine is one of Colombia’s most iconic emerald sources, known for producing high-quality stones with vivid green hues. Having operated since pre colonial times, Coscuez is now managed by FURA Gems, which is the first to apply scientific and industrialized methods to this historic site. Recent exploration and extraction efforts have yielded stones of exceptional clarity and saturation, adding to the mine’s storied legacy. The Coscuez mine produces a variety of emerald types, including the rare “cat’s eye” and trapiche formations, which are highly prized by collectors and jewellers alike. As demand for Colombian emeralds continues to rise, Coscuez remains a crucial contributor to the global gemstone market.
Coscuez in Colombia is among the world’s richest sources of high-quality emeralds, and FURA Gems is today the singular source of Coscuez roughs. The region is renowned for the exceptional colour, shape, size and natural brilliance of its crystals with “Life” which is the combination of quality or liveliness of emeralds’ Clarity, Transparency and Brilliancy.
FURA’s Coscuez emerald comes with a little of every (Colombian) mine in a range of hues, which is a unique feature of these deposits with well saturated slightly yellowish green to a strongly saturated, slightly bluish Green with a medium dark to very dark tone.
Colombia provides half the world’s emeralds by value, and nine-tenths of its gem-quality emeralds. Large Colombian emeralds are uncommon and highly sought-after. Our Coscuez mine produces large gems, and a few of truly iconic size, that will delight fine jewellers and serious buyers.
