Christie’s May Geneva Auction

Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction at the Four Season Hotel des Bergues in Geneva on May 15, features the usual – but fantastic – selection of historic and modern jewellery from all periods, as well as from the most famous jewellery houses such as Harry Winston, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and many more.

Highlights of this auction include a sensational Art Deco diamond and onyx brooch by Cartier, a totally cool D, Internally Flawless diamond ring of 23.15 cts by Taffin, a very large Colombian emerald of 17.60 cts, and a magnificent Kashmir sapphire ring of 11.03 cts, not to mention a Cartier Mystery Clock, and the 202 carat Fancy Intense Yellow diamond, seen here, called “the Yellow Rose.” (… but wait until you see the eyebrow raising profile view – a bench jeweler’s nightmare!! see image below)

Leading off at the very top of the list for Christie’s is this “Yellow Rose,” an unmounted Fancy Intense Yellow pear shape modified brilliant-cut diamond, weighing 202.18 carats. Accompanied by a GIA report, 2022, report no. 5222440622: the diamond is graded as SI1 in clarity, excellent polish and symmetry, with medium blue fluorescence. [From the profile view, with its unusual point, it is hard to visualize the excellent symmetry grade. – gr]

Isn’t this profile interesting? An extremely thick faceted girdle with what appears to be a very steep crown and deep pavilion at the point of the pear!

TWO EXTRAORDINARY NATURAL PEARL SAUTOIRS: measuring approximately from 12.5 mm to 4.5 mm – truly outstanding!

The longest sautoir, comprising a total of 171 round to oval and button-shaped natural pearls, ranging approximately from 12.55 to 4.45 mm; with the shortest sautoir, comprising a total of 182 round to roundish and button-shaped natural pearls, ranging approximately from 10.75 to 4.10 mm

THE TAFFIN DIAMOND RING

An Emerald-cut diamond of 23.15 carats, single-cut diamonds, platinum, signed Taffin, numbered, brown Taffin case. Accompanied by a GIA report, 2020, report no. 1122698735: 23.15 carats, D colour, Flawless, excellent polish and symmetry, Type IIa.

FLAWLESS – Yes there are Flawless diamonds!

*The Culet is rectangular/elongated so the stone is not listed as a Square Emerald Cut on the report. Only (and exactly!) 1 mm off from square: 16.64 x 15.64  | 1.06:1 ratio.

Please refer to the Jewellery department for an update on the GIA gemmological report. (Once Flawless diamonds are set into jewelry, there is a strong possibility that the grade is now Internally Flawless.)

Normally, Briolettes are used as drops for pendants and earrings. This is quite unique!
