Record Year at Heritage Auction House
$103.5 million to UNICEF to aid Ukraine Refugees
Heritage was able to give back, thanks to Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, who chose Heritage to offer his Nobel Peace Prize medal. The entirety of the staggering $103.5 million price realized went directly to UNICEF to aid refugees impacted by the war in Ukraine.
And now for some gem industry record breakers.
A Very Good Year!
Heritage Auction House tells us that they had a very good year; $1.45 billion in sales, and setting dozens of auction records along the way.
One fine showing was this Fancy Orangy Red Diamond, 1.21 carats, selling for $1,755,000 US! Graded I2, many believed that the red diamond’s estimate of somewhere around $200,000 was expected. However, this shows that clarity often times does not affect value. Specifically with this diamond, dark inclusions in a darker bodycolor stone has less affect than dark inclusions in a light bodycolor or no bodycolor stone. The rare red color was what took this diamond to a record sale!

A 17.63 carats Fancy Intense Yellow diamond ring did very well, bringing in $591,000! Not only was the color very strong, the cut of the diamond was very appealing.

Editor’s note – I think I had this card when I was a kid. Ten years ago, when visiting Cooperstown, New York, home of the baseball Hall of Fame, there was a baseball card shop with a sign in the window that said, “We have all the cards your mother threw away.” Makes me want to cry. – gr
