Combating Fraud: GIAs App Proves Laser Inscription is Genuine or Not
Gary Roskin –
Roskin Gem News Report –
One of the benefits to attending in-person trade shows is the random encounter of something new, or something you have missed. Case in point, the GIA’s Match iD.
“The GIA Match iD™ is an inscription viewing instrument that, when paired with the iOS version of the GIA App, can connect to GIA’s secure database to match a loose diamond to its GIA digital grading report using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
“Equipped with a high-definition camera, it allows users to view a diamond’s GIA laser inscription and transmits the image to the GIA App where it is captured and analyzed. By analyzing the physical characteristics of the diamond inscription along with the inscription number, the AI-powered GIA App is able to match the inscription image to its corresponding grading report in the GIA database, thus confirming that the diamond is accompanied by an authentic GIA grading report.”
Why is this SO Important?
We know what you are thinking. If we can simply loupe a diamond’s girdle, read the inscription, log onto GIA’s website to use GIA’s Report Check, why do we need a $700 piece of equipment?
What the promotional material has left off is “in case of fraud.”
As seen reported here in the Roskin Gem News Report, there are unscrupulous people who would cut a synthetic diamond to the exact measurements of a natural diamond, laser inscribe the synthetic diamond with the same report number as the natural diamond, and voila, a diamond that could fool the uninitiated.
The Match iD tells you whether the inscription is actually THE inscription that was on the natural diamond. No longer can the criminal simply inscribe a diamond and have it fool the jeweler. A quick scan and search through the GIA database and the GIA Match iD will tell you whether this is the original inscription – or a fake.*
(*okay – so it doesn’t actually tell you its a fake inscription, but it will not tell you that it matches the natural report. If it matches the natural report, then the inscription is real.)

While not perfect, if you are taking in a lot of GIA graded diamonds, this should be a consideration. But know what it can, and cannot do.
