Phillips Auction in Geneva: The Results! Jewels Auction: TWO

The Geneva Jewels Auction: TWO took place on May 13th, and now here are the results! Looking over the preview report from our May the Fourth newsletter here, let’s take a look at those beautiful jewels and see how well they did. If you recall, this auction had several amazing gems, including the 6.21 carats Fancy Vivid Pink diamond, and the Argyle Phoenix, a Fancy Red diamond!


And Here They Are
First up, the 6.21 carats Fancy Vivid Pink diamond.

Exceptional Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond Ring

Set with an oval Fancy Vivid Pink diamond of outstanding colour weighing 6.21 carats, set between two modified kite-shaped diamonds. The modified kite-shaped diamonds weigh a total of 1.21 carats; in our expert’s opinion, F colour, VVS clarity. Accompanied by GIA report no. 2225767179, stating that the diamond is Fancy Vivid Pink, Natural Colour, VS1 Clarity, Excellent Polish and Symmetry; together with a Type IIa classification letter and a GIA Portrait.

Estimated at 9,540,000–13,630,000 CHF – Sold for: 10,869,500 CHF 


Next up … ‘The Amazon Queen’, Impressive – Very Large – Emerald Pendant

Yes, it is certainly big enough! Fit for a Queen!

Set with an octagonal step-cut emerald weighing 280.84 carats, measuring approximately 40 x 35mm.

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 129808 and Gübelin report no. 23041003, each stating that the emerald is of Colombian origin, with a minor amount of oil in fissures; each with an appendix letter and a monograph, together with an additional gemmological report.

Estimated at 1,360,000–2,360,000 CHF – Sold for: 2,782,500 CHF


‘The Argyle Phoenix,’ a Very Rare and Mesmerizing Fancy Red Diamond Ring

The Argyle Red Diamond
In GIA terminology, there are no saturation descriptors like intense or vivid since it is assumed that the “Fancy Red” hue is as saturated as it gets.

This 18K yellow gold ring is set with a round brilliant-cut Fancy Red diamond, weighing 1.56 carats. The red diamond is accompanied by a GIA report no. 5151433979, stating that the diamond is Fancy Red, Natural Colour; together with a GIA monograph.

Estimated at CHF910,000–1,365,000 – Sold for : 3,811,000 CHF!!
That’s 3 times the high estimate! This will really bump up the value of Red Diamonds!


Fancy Intense Green diamond, Diamond and Pink Sapphire Ring

This is a classic setting, surrounding the green with pinks. 1. it’s a nice complimentary color to the green, and 2. it makes the green pop a little more.
Using pink sapphires instead of pink diamonds keeps the ring affordable. (Well, affordable for those who can afford to buy a fancy intense green diamond!)

Set with a cut-cornered rectangular Fancy Intense Green diamond, weighing 2.26 carats, within a frame of circular-cut pink sapphires. The shoulders are embellished with brilliant-cut diamonds.

Accompanied by GIA report no. 11772943, stating that the diamond is Fancy Intense Green, Natural Colour, VS1 Clarity.

Estimated at 240,000–350,000 – Sold for: 363,000 CHF  


Harry Winston Sapphire and Diamond Necklace
– a Mix of Heat and No Heat Sri Lankan Sapphires

Set with oval and cushion-shaped sapphires, weighing 4.28, 4.98, 4.35, 5.30, 4.85, 4.11 and 4.76 carats respectively, the sapphires are highlighted with marquise-shaped and brilliant-cut diamonds. Necklace length is approximately 390mm, and signed Harry Winston.

The necklace is accompanied by an SSEF report no. 133627, stating that the sapphire weighing 5.30 carats is of Ceylon origin, with no indications of heating; together with SSEF report no. 133625, no. 133626, no. 133627, no. 133620, no. 133630 and no. 133631, each stating that the sapphires weighing 4.28 carats, 4.98 carats, 4.35 carats, 4.85 carats, 4.11 carats and 4.76 carats respectively are of Ceylon origin, with indications of heating.

Estimated at 170,000–240,000 CHF – Sold for: 190,500 CHF 


Oscar Heyman Ruby and Diamond Brooch

Look at the craftsmanship in cutting all of the rubies to fit the mounting! That’s Oscar Heyman!

Modelled as a pansy, featuring a central oval ruby, weighing 3.17 carats, highlighted with calibré-cut rubies and brilliant-cut diamonds, measuring approximately 35 x 30mm. Accompanied by an SSEF report no. 137195, stating that the center ruby is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating.

Estimated at 48,000–55,000 CHF – Sold for: 50,800 CHF 


Friedrich Pair of Sapphire and Diamond Earrings

A marvelous design, using emerald cuts, then the fancy yellow rounds, followed by the trapezoids, and then the sapphire cushions. Sweet!

Each earring set with a cushion-shaped sapphire, highlighted with a near colorless trapezoid and emerald-cut diamond, and a round brilliant-cut diamond of yellow color. Measuring approximately 30mm in length, and signed Friedrich. The earrings are accompanied by an SSEF report no. 88122, stating that the sapphires are of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating.

There were two special notes, standard caveats, attached to this lot:
– Please note that the report is more than 5 years old and might require an update.
– Please note that the brilliant-cut diamonds of yellow tint have not been tested for natural colour origin.


Sapphire and Diamond Ring

Delicious! Jaw dropping! 18 carat, no heat Sri Lankan sapphire.

Platinum ring set with an emerald-cut blue sapphire, weighing 18.01 carats, flanked by two triangular diamonds.

Accompanied by an SSEF report no. 137317, stating that the sapphire is of Ceylon origin, with no indications of heating; and a Gübelin report no. 24020085, stating that the sapphire shows no indications of heating.

Estimated at 38,000–55,000 CHF – Sold for: 196,850! YES!! Almost 4 times the high Estimate!


Ruby, Diamond and Enamel Parure, circa mid to late 1800s

Definitely a piece for the times (mid to late 1800s). But interesting enough that we wanted to include it here.

Comprising: a necklace of garland design, applied with black enamel, the floral motifs embellished with circular-cut and cushion-shaped rubies and diamonds, length approximately 415mm, two small rubies and three small diamonds deficient, a pair of ear clips, length approximately 80mm, a brooch, measuring approximately 114 x 75mm, one small diamond deficient, and a hair ornament, length approximately 260mm, each with partial French maker’s mark and assay marks for gold, fitted case stamped Vve Grognier-Arnaud.

Estimated at 11,000–17,000 CHF – Sold for: 33,020 CHF


Michele della Valle Pair of Spinel and Diamond Ear Clips

Truly note worthy, eye-catching diamonds and spinels beaded pair of earclips.

Each earring set with spinel beads, highlighted with colet-set brilliant-cut diamonds, measuring approximately 70 mm (2.75 inches) in length, each signed Michele della Valle.

Estimated at 11,000–14,000 CHF – 15,240 CHF 


Buccellati Amethyst and Diamond Necklace

AMAZING! This could be like wearing a big fluffy purple collar!

Set with faceted amethyst beads (briolettes), the clasp embellished with round brilliant-cut diamonds, measuring approximately 470 mm, signed Mario Buccellati.

Estimated at 3,000–5,000 CHF – Sold for 3,566 CHF


Cartier Gem Set and Diamond Necklace, ‘Panthère’

Beautifully made, classic design. Cartier.

Modelled as a panther draped over an onyx hoop, the panther is set with brilliant-cut diamonds and polished onyx spots, with pear-shaped cabochon emerald eyes, all suspended from a cabochon-ruby and brilliant-cut diamond-set chain, measuring approximately 400 mm long, signed Cartier. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Cartier.

Estimated at 95,000–140,000 CHF – Sold for 95,250 CHF


Suzanne Belperron Chalcedony, Natural Pearl and Cultured Pearl Brooch, circa 1955

Of foliate design, set with a carved chalcedony leaf, the articulated gold branches embellished with four button-shaped natural pearls measuring from 6.98-7.28 x 6.27mm to 8.62-8.70 x 8.19mm, and cultured pearls, measuring approximately 140 x 90mm, French maker’s mark for Groené et Darde and assay mark for gold. The brooch is accompanied by an SSEF report no. 86310, stating that the four pearls are natural, saltwater, and one is an assembled cultured blister pearl.
